I am a victim of an Instagram impostor. A very serious matter. Before you judge me, I want to give you an update about my situation. I had a serious scanxiety because I was going to my yearly cancer check up and I really felt ill, and at the same time I had a son who wanted to die and I had to follow up his treatment in the psychiatric hospital. The sum of it all made me lose sleep at night and thus had poorer judgment in any situation. My situation became even more difficult, when I wanted to help a person who had sinister intentions. I couldn’t read that from his messages then, but be in hindsight I should have seen all the red flags. I have come to terms with the situation, but not with the fact that Meta overlooks or ignores all my notifications.

The scammers Instagram account

I started to follow this account one day in May. The scammer wrote a DM to me but I didn’t respond to his message for after a month. I told this person a bit about my life. It was nothing sensitive and I could have given him or her a copy of my blog. Since the impostor call himself for Keanu Reeves I assume it is a male, but for all I know it could be a female, or several persons who operate this account. The scammer and impostor is still operating on Instagram.
After a few days he asked me to continue on What’s app because of its end-to-end cryptation. He started to tell me about his life, date and place of birth and were he grew up. I told myself that this is information anyone can find on the internet.
The impostor has 31 pictures on Instagram of Keanu Reeves and they never change. He got 6320 followers almost constantly and he follows about 155 other accounts, and most of them are females.
Red flags
I eventually realized that I should have done a lot of research before I started helping him. First of all, why should a celebrity contact me? This person was nice, kind, respectful, empatic and apparently down to earth. He even wrote about the tour with Dogstar and how exhausted he was. His phone number was +1(559)400-1431. I found out later that the area code is Fresno in California and not Hollywood, and it is an unregistrated number.
He was blackmailed by his old management because of a Coca-Cola contract. The police had apparently raided his house searching for these papers, but he had hidden them in a bank. He showed me a signed contract, but he had to hide this amongst other things. I saw the signature on someone elses account and it apparently looked genuine. He asked me to receive a box with papers to save his career.
I thought I got nothing to loose so I decided to have the box sent with Express Range Logistics and with a tracking number. The courier was no other than “Tom Kaplan.” The impostor offered me money, but I didn’t want them.
I really have no idea if Reeves is a good actor or not, but I remember seeing Speed in the cinema. But that is a long time ago. I had seen the first of the John Wick films, but found that these were not films for me. Back then I also didn’t know who Tom Kaplan was. Eventually I realized that Reeves is not on social media at all according to several fan accounts.

It seemed that everything was ok and according to plan. Tom Kaplan or who ever this courier was, kept me updated on E-mail. But when the box “came to Great Britain” I had to pay for a British stamp and Kaplan was so sorry for the “unforseen development”. They didn’t know about this stamp. The invoice was £ 3050 GBP which I refused to pay, and I asked them to return the box to the US.
But Kaplan told me that if I didn’t pay for the stamp and the box was sent back to the US, I would be investigated and there could be a prosecution. And yet I didn’t understand that I was an victim for an Instagram impostor. So what did I do?Notifications about criminals on Instagram
